Activities

The Southglenn Gators swim team sponsors many activities during our swim season, which starts in May and runs to the end of July. Activities include participation in swim meets with other teams in our league and division. The club sponsors daily practice sessions as well as special learning opportunities including stroke and turn clinics and a mock meet. All swimming activities are under the direction and supervision of our experienced coaching staff. The team also hosts numerous social events including pep rallies, pancake breakfasts, the annual potluck dinner that kicks off the season, the awards banquet which concludes the season and an annual parent's party. The club schedules a registration meeting in April where you can learn about the club and get signed up. And lastly, all these activities and events happen due to the generous volunteer efforts of all our parents. To help parents and swimmers keep track of all these events and activities, the team publishes a weekly newsletter every Tuesday during the season. Look for it at the pool or on the website here.

Practices

Practice is held five days a week during the season. The first two weeks are generally held in the afternoon while school is in session. Once school is out, practice is held in the morning. Please see the events calendar on the home page for exact times and dates.

Practice guidelines:

  • Swimmers are expected to practice 3 times a week.
  • Swimmers must attend practice on Friday to participate in the meet on Saturdays

Weather guidelines:

  • We will be having practice unless bad weather conditions exist.
  • Do not come if there is rain, lightning, snow, tornados, or any other major natural disaster.
  • We will have practice even if there is drizzle or if it's cool outside.
  • Please do NOT call the front desk about practice.
  • Do check the home page of the website at www.sgccgators.com. The practice status box will inform you of the day's current practice status.
  • If practice has been cancelled because of weather, it will be posted on the website's home page.
  • Remember, just because there may not be a 13-14, 15-18 practice, does not mean that there will not be am 8 & under practice. Please check the Hotline and/or Website for information about each practice.

Stroke and Turn Clinic

In an effort to get everyone off to the best possible start in the do's and don'ts of swimming, the GATORS coaching staff will be conducting stroke and turn clinics one night a week during the season. Please see the events calendar on the home page for exact times and dates. For those interested, check out the Stroke Rules for the do's and don't of the various strokes.

Mock Meet

For those new to swimming and/or for those wanting to know more about how the meets work, the GATORS conduct a mock meet one evening before the first real meet. Please see the events calendar on the home page for exact day and time.

Social Events

The Gators are a recreational swim team that strives to make the swimming experience as enjoyable and fun as possible for its swimmers as well as parents. The club hosts a number of social events during the season, including:

  • Pep rallies. Every Friday afternoon the coaches sponsor a pep-rally to get swimmer ready and excited about the meet the next day. The coaches come up with a theme for every week. Be sure to watch for the Coach's Corner article each week for more information.
  • Pancake breakfasts. Several times a season, parents put on pancake breakfast for the swimmer - giving them a little extra incentive to get up and make it to practice.
  • Potluck dinner. The annual potluck dinner is the traditional kickoff for the season. Everybody brings their favorite dish. Swimmers and parents renew old friendships - and start to build new ones.
  • Awards banquet. The annual awards banquet concludes the swim season. The club caters a complete meal and the coach's hand out individual awards to each swimmer.
  • Parent's party. The club hosts a parents-only party early in the season providing an opportunity to get to know everyone a little better - which can be a little difficult during the chaos of a swim meet.

Meets

Five dual meets are held during the season. We swim against each team in our division. There are 90 events scheduled for each meet encompassing four different strokes in six different age categories in a variety of distances. Team and individual meet results are tracked by the club and posted on the website shortly after the conclusion of the meet (usually within 24 hours.) And for those interested, we also maintain team and league records on the website.

During the week following the last dual meet, there are three preliminary meets - or prelims - where swimmers from all six teams in the division gather to decide who will go to the Championships (finals) meet to represent Southglenn. Championships are held on the Saturday following prelims where the all six teams will compete to determine the division champion.

Finally, on the last Saturday of the season, the Mile Hi Swim League hosts the All-Stars meet. Swimmers from all divisions who have broken all-star times in one or more events gather to compete for the best in each individual event.

Please see the events calendar on the home page for exact times and dates. Maps to the away meets can be found here.

Meet guidelines:

  • If your child(ren) cannot participate in a swim meet, we ask that you please notify us by either 1) filling out the "Sign Out" book which will be available at the front desk; or 2) using the Miss Meet Notification on the front page of the website. The dates of each meet are listed. Simply indicate by the Tuesday of the meet(s) that your swimmer will not participate. Please do not just tell us; we have over 130 swimmers to keep track of.
  • Since some swim meets and practices are cold and occasionally there may be snow or rain, please dress warmly and stay dry. The last thing we want is for a child to get sick because they did not dress properly. Proper clothing includes: sweatshirts, sweatpants, socks, and a hat. Layers, layers, layers! Remember, you can always take a layer off, but you cannot put it back on if you do not have it.

Registration

Registration is the first step in joining the Gators swim team. The club hosts an annual registration meeting in April. (Please see the events calendar on the home page for exact day and time.) During the meeting, you will hear from various officers of the club about club activities and events. You will also have an opportunity to order swim suits and sign up for various volunteer positions.

Registration guidelines:

  • Every swimmer must be registered to participate in the Southglenn Gators Swim Team.
  • The deadline for registration and payments - without late fees - is the first meet.
  • Fees are as follows:
    • $55 for 1 child
    • $90 for 2 children, or
    • $110 for 3 or more children
  • The deadline for late registrations & payments - with a $10 late fee – is the fourth meet.
  • The registration form must be turned in before swimmers can enter the pool for practice or a meet.
  • The team has established a partial refund policy. You must sign up prior to the deadline. If, however, at any time up to the first meet your swimmer decides not to swim, you can receive a refund of all but six (6) dollars. Those six dollars go to the league to cover insurance and cannot be refunded. Think of it as getting two weeks of swimming instruction for about 60 cents a lesson.

Volunteering

Volunteers are essential for the Gator swim team to function properly. As such, every family is requested - and obligated - to contribute volunteer time. Please read about the basic features of our volunteer policy below. For more information, please download the complete policy. Then, when you are ready, download the form or enter your volunteer information online.

Volunteer Guidelines:

  • Every family will be required to contribute 6 volunteer sessions, or shifts, including 1 shift during prelims/championships.
  • These shifts will be carefully tracked by team leads.
  • Every member family will write out a check for $100 at the beginning of the season.
  • These checks will NOT be cashed until the season is completed.
  • You will be given a credit against that amount as follows: $15/session for the first five sessions and $25 for session six.
  • There are numerous ways to contribute, not all of which require you to attend a meet.
